Chapter 17

Elona

I DIDN’T WAKE UP UNTIL late this morning. Mike left me a message saying he had something to do. It must’ve been something pretty important for him to run off so early. We’ve been spending every Saturday together since we met; So, I don’t quite know what to do with myself today.

I lay in bed until it’s almost lunchtime. I haven’t heard anything from Mike yet. I decide I’ll go grab a bite to eat. I don’t really know what I want. I just know I want to eat something light. I’ll decide on the way. I jump in my car and onto the street. I decide on Cafe Mone. Their breakfast is good. Maybe lunch won’t disappoint either. I may even run into that girl again. I don’t know her, but she has my curiosity peaked. Something with her was off when I met her.

I pull in and park near the left side of the building. I get out of my car, hit the lock key, and start toward the building. I glance around the parking lot out of habit and spot Mike’s car. I think to myself, what is he doing here? Hmm. Maybe he had a business meeting with his father. I shrug my shoulders. That won’t deter me from my plans. Whatever he’s doing, I won’t interrupt. I’ll go in, get lunch and leave him to it. That’s not going to stop me from looking at him, though. I missed waking up next to him this morning.

When I near the corner of the building, I catch sight of him sitting at a small table near the window. That waitress from before is sitting with him. I reduce my speed so I can assess the situation better. She’s looking down. Maybe he sensed that something was off with her too. Perhaps he did what I was planning to do and asked her if she was alright.

I don’t think anything of it until I see him place his hands on top of hers. I come to a complete stop. I’m not a jealous person, but I can’t think of a single reason why he would be holding her hand like that. His back is facing me, but I can see his mouth moving from the side. She pulls her hand away, and I see her reach up and wipe her face. Why is she crying? They talk a little more. She pays the bill, and they stand to leave. The wheels began to turn in my head. I’m curious to see how all of this plays out, so I duck beside the building.

Moments later, they exit and stop between their cars and face each other. If she’s not working today, that means... My thoughts trail off. I can’t hear what they are saying, but the way she looks at Mike says a whole lot. I close my eyes and breathe deeply. When my eyes reopen, they are embraced in a hug that lasts a little too long. My stomach churns.
